RETENTION
We take every step to prepare your natural lashes for extensions and use the best quality products to ensure longevity of your lashes. With the best aftercare & maintenance kits on offer sometimes we still a small number of returning clients with poor retention. For our infills we expect around 40-50% of your lash extensions left to be able to charge an infill. However if we see much less than this we would then need to look at reasons for this happening, provide advice and as a one off complete a full set if there is time. If however this becomes a regular problem we may need to seek alternative methods. We appreciate that we loose around 2-5 natural lashes per day regardless of having eyelash extensions but not only is it costly to the client to need weekly infills but we know how some factors that could be affecting them. So we have creating a checklist of lifestyle factors for you to see if any of these apply to you which could be the reason for poor retention.

-
OILY SKIN- If you are prone to oily skin then it is important to increase the cleansing of your extensions. This is to remove the oils which cause breakdown of the glue bond allowing them to slide off.
-
GETTING LASHES WET AFTER APPLICATION- It is important to allow the glue to fully cure after application and we advise not to get lashes wet for the first 24 Hours.
-
SUNBEDS- Avoid using sunbeds for the first 24 hours after lash application. You must keep your lashes dry until completely cured.
-
MAKEUP- For makeup lovers you may find that heavy use of eye makeup without cleaning away will cause premature lash loss. This is because the chemicals in makeup start to breakdown the glue bonds allowing lifting and eventually loss of the extensions. All waterproof makeup also requires harsher chemicals to remove including oil based products which causes retention issues. Do not use mascara with eyelash extensions.
-
EYELASH CURLERS- Do not use eyelash curlers with extensions as this causes breakages to your natural lashes whilst extensions are appplied.
-
FACIAL WIPES/BABY WIPES - These are not ideal to use as a form of cleaning the lashes as the fibers from the wipes catch the extensions pulling them off with your natural lash attached. Please do NOT use them to clean the eye area. Lash maintenance kits are available to purchase.
-
MASK WEARING- Some jobs require longer periods of mask wearing and this unfortunately plays a big part in retention loss. Constant moisture from your breath keeps the lashes wet and will reduce the longevity of the lashes. We advise removal of the masks when lashing as this will not allow the lashes to cure properly during application however the lash tech will always wear one.
-
SLEEPING- Any back sleepers out there will have no problems keeping lashes in sleeping this way and its shame the same cant be said for side or face sleepers. We see more lashes lost on one eye than the other and this is normal with side sleepers. Buying a satin pillow case can help stop the lashes from catching in the cotton fibres but face sleepers will struggle to keep them in as the pressure on the eyes can cause early breakages. It is not uncommon to awake in the morning to see some of your extensions on your pillow. For those loving the cateye lash style the outer corner lashes may be the first to come off when sleeping this way.
-
CLEANING- Gone are the days when outdated advice was given to clients to not clean their eyelash extensions. This is not correct and you should be advising your clients to regularly clean them with a proper lash shampoo. For oily prone skin & heavy makeup users should be advised to increase cleansing. Check our BLOG for why you should clean your lashes.
-
STEAMING YOUR FACE- Avoid face packs and steaming your face within the first 24 hours of your lash appointment
-
DRY BRUSHING - Mascara wands are given to every client after application and should avoid dry brushing. When lashes are wet after cleansing then brush those lashes from the top curling outwards. A little wiggle of the brush on the lash line helps to separate the lashes and wont catch or pull your natural lashes out if done when dry. We offer lash fans to aid drying (ask your lash tech) the freshly cleansed lashes alternatively a hairdryer on low heat & speed settings can work also.
-
PICKING, RUBBING OR TOUCHING - Please refrain from rubbing, picking or touching your extensions with your fingers. Your hands are full of oils, dirt & bacteria that when constantly rubbed onto your lashes will break down the glue bonds. Oils will close your volume fans making them look messy and picking will remove the natural lashes having less lashes to apply extensions to.
-
PREGNANCY/MEDICATIONS- Hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy can make your skin produce more oils and this can cause early loss of extensions. This is not always the case but if retention is becoming less and less then it may be advisable to have a break until hormones return to normal. This also applies to some medications. If HRT medications are being used it can effect lash lifting. In some cases the lash lift drops very quickly or may not lift at all.
-
SERUMS/OILS - We all love a good facial and buying specific oils for our face but lash extensions just don't like it. Avoid any oils around the eye area to ensure longevity of the extensions. Also if you are using oils for your hair this could affect your lashes!
-
EXCESSIVE SWEATING- For those Gym bunny's and happy joggers we admire your energy but if you are excessively sweating you will need to cleanse your lashes more often as if the sweat is kept on the lashes it will break down the glue bonds and again cause retention loss. This also applies to frequent sauna and steam room visits.
-
CRYING - Yes this is true!, Be sure to send the lash bill to anyone who is making you cry because the sodium in our tears breaks down the Glue bonds. We know that you may not constantly have access to your lash cleanser but crying will also close the lash fans making them look crispy and dry. A good cleanse with your lash shampoo, brush & dry will fluff them back out and erase those tears.

There is so many factors that can effect the retention as you can see. So if all of those listed are followed correctly you will be able to happily go 3 weeks before needing an infill. Booking regular appointments is super important as missing an infill will mean you will need a full set as explained on our infills page so we would recommend booking in advance up to 6 months to avoid disappointment. We are aware that there is limited availability and you may not be able to get a 2 week infill on the day you want so we advised DM your lash tech to check availability or maybe finding a 3 week infill appointment instead.
